To help keep plastic bags out of the landfill, artist Shawn Hart found a way to recycle (or "upcycle") these bags into useful items.
This one-of-a-kind upcycled (recycled) tote bag is made from more than 100 plastic bags. This tote is affectionately called the "Big Ugly Bag," but it's actually quite beautiful. This handmade, crocheted tote is really strong and stretchy. It can hold odd-shaped or heavy items and things that you don't want to get nice bags dirty with. Because it is plastic, you can hose it off! Great for the beach, kids stuff, dog stuff, groceries ...
This tote is great to go over the shoulder like a purse and large enough to carry over-night items.
This bag took many, many plastic bags to make (probably over 100) and at least 40-50 hours of labor (possibly more). It measures 15 inches long, 11 inches wide and 13 inches tall. The handles are 10 inches high, making the entire bag 25" in height.

This bowl is made from strips of plastic grocery bags (mostly Publix, Target and Winn-Dixie bags!) called "Plarn" or plastic yarn. These recycled, or ... upcycled bags make a durable bowl that has all kinds of uses. Because it is made of plastic, it is super-easy to clean. It's flexible, so it holds all kinds of shapes. Better yet, it helps out mother earth by keeping plastic bags out of the landfill! This unique bowl is approximately 6" in diameter and about 2" high.
